Discussion in Lodge
Let us start by describing what should not be discussed in a Lodge meeting. As we should all be aware, no discussion of political topics is to be held in Lodge. Also no discussion of theological or other religious topics related to specific religious beliefs or creeds are to be held. The topics covering racial questions, private business or other non-Masonic topics are not to be discussed. Peace and harmony are to prevail in the Lodge at all times.
Discussion of petitioners is forbidden in Lodge. The interview committee only reports "favorable" or "unfavorable" without any explanation. Discussion of how a brother plans or has balloted is a Masonic offence punishable by suspension for a period of time. As mentioned earlier, all discussion in the lodge should peaceful and harmonious. Hurtful, demeaning, unseemly and discourteous remarks are not to be made in Lodge. Now the protocol in participating in a discussion in Lodge: All remarks are directed to the Master unless he gives his permission to address a particular officer or brother. The brother wishing to speak should rise and come to the sign of fidelity and wait until he is recognized by the Master. He then addresses the Master by saying "Worshipful Master" followed by saying what he needs to say in a precise and timely manner, then he sits down. All the while he is speaking he is at the sign of fidelity. It is a privilege to speak in Lodge and should not be used to deliver a speech merely for its own sake. |
Presents to Candidates
It is the custom of this Grand Jurisdiction to present candidates for the degrees a copy of the Bible or the holy book of their individual faith. The timing of the giving is up the Master of the Lodge and Lodge custom. In some Lodges it is given at the end of the First Degree while in others it is given at the end of the Third Degree. When presenting the Bible or holy book, it is presented open as a symbol to the candidate that it should be opened and read frequently.
The brethren should understand that if they wish to give a gift to a candidate at the conclusion of a degree, then all candidates of the class should receive the same gift. This included rings, pins, books, etc. Why do we do this? Our ritual states that all men are on the level when becoming a Mason. Therefore all candidates must be treated equally when presented with a gift. If a sponsor, or other brother, wishes to give only one candidate a gift after a degree, then he should do it in private out of the site of the other brothers in the class. Keep in mind that Masons meet on the level. |
